Résumé
In this paper, we examine the effect of institutional, regulatory and macroeconomic factors on insurer profitability. Our results suggest insurer profitability tends to increase in the presence of corruption in developed countries and in the presence of greater economic freedoms. Furthermore, we find limited evidence for the positive impact of a stringent regulatory environment and for the negative impact of the Twin Peaks supervisory architecture on profitability. We do find evidence that the introduction of Solvency II is associated with a decrease in ROA. We also find evidence for the impact of macroeconomic factors as insurer profitability tends to be higher in the presence of inflation and lower in the presence of higher interest rates.
