Résumé
Already during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, SMEs turned to banks for additional bank funding to counteract severe liquidity shortages. By means of generalized estimating equations and simple linear regression analysis, I show that without the massive international and governmental support, bank lending would have declined severely. The pandemic related CGSs and the low interest rate environment boosted bank lending for SMEs. Moreover, companies in deteriorated sectors received significantly less long-term and less short-term bank loans than firms in sectors that have flourished. Also, countries that chose to make a larger CGSs fund available to stimulate bank lending report a higher increase in the use of bank loans.
