Recapitulation
This paper provides an overview of the political economy literature dealing with questions related to global governance, with a particular focus on its democratization. It further outlines an ambitious research agenda for bringing global governance and its structures within the political economy realm. More specific, political economy has so far continued to focus on national institutions. Formal political economic models however could greatly enhance the understanding of both democracy and global governance. Moreover, political economy could help to judge a wide variety of claims about the democratization and functioning of international institutions. It could further provide proposals for promoting the democratization of global governance.
